8/11 Meeting: Just Cause Evictions & Relocation Assistance
On Tuesday, August 11, 2020, the SBCC Ordinance Committee will meet to discuss "Consideration of Draft – Just Cause Eviction and Relocation Assistance Ordinance".
The following is from a memo by Ariel Calonne, Santa Barbara City Attorney.
On February 11, 2020, the Santa Barbara City Council directed preparation of a Just Cause Eviction Ordinance which would be more protective than the state's Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (AB 1482). The City Council also directed preparation of a Relocation Assistance Nexus Study for further consideration of possible relocation assistance payments for no-fault just cause evictions. The City retained Keyser Marston Associates, Inc. (KMA) to prepare the study.
On April 17, 2020, the City Attorney's Office released a Public Comment Draft package including four documents: 1) Staff report to the City Council's Ordinance Committee, 2) draft Just Cause Eviction Ordinance, 3) draft Relocation Assistance Payment Amount Resolution, and 4) the KMA Relocation Assistance Study. The package is available for download HERE.
This matter was originally scheduled to be heard by the City Council Ordinance Committee on April 21, 2020. Due to COVID-19, this meeting was delayed to accommodate and encourage increased public participation.
The City Council's Ordinance Committee will begin its consideration of this proposal on Tuesday August 11, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. The agenda packet materials will be available online at www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov on Thursday August 6. Instructions for logging into this online meeting will also be available on the agenda posted Thursday.
